Cookies and privacy choices
Optional visit and performance measurement stays off until you allow it. Reading, contacting the editor and joining the newsletter work whether you allow or decline.

At a glance
- Allow and Decline are equally available. You can change your choice on this page at any time.
- A necessary preference cookie remembers your choice for 180 days. It does not identify you.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics loads only with permission. No advertising or session recording is enabled.
- A Global Privacy Control browser signal keeps optional measurement off.
- Fonts and images come from this site. No external video player loads here.
- Newsletter consent is separate. Buttondown receives details only when the signup form is submitted.
Your choice
Optional measurement is off until your saved choice is checked.
Allowing measurement loads Cloudflare's measurement script. Declining prevents it from loading. Withdrawing permission reloads the page so a previously loaded script cannot keep collecting during navigation. Withdrawal does not undo statistics already collected. If cookies are blocked, the choice may not survive a new page or visit; measurement still starts off by default.
There is no need to accept a privacy notice to read the site. This choice applies only to optional website measurement, not newsletter emails.
What is stored on your device
Necessary preference
dt_site_measurement is a first-party cookie written only when you make a choice. It contains v1.allow or v1.decline, lasts up to 180 days and is restricted to this website. It remembers the privacy setting you requested. It is not used for advertising or recognising a person.
Page operation
The public app does not keep account sessions, contact drafts or scroll positions in local storage, session storage or a browser database. Temporary interface state stays in memory. Browser history and normal caching of public page files are controlled by your browser.
Hosting security
Cloudflare may use security cookies if it needs to distinguish legitimate traffic from abuse. These are separate from optional measurement. Any security challenge is handled by Cloudflare; it is not permission for advertising or optional tracking.
Optional visit and performance measurement
With permission, a script from static.cloudflareinsights.com sends measurements to Cloudflare. These help us understand page views, visits, referring sites, browser and device categories, country and page performance. Counts are not unique people and exclude readers who decline or block measurement.
Cloudflare says its Web Analytics does not use cookies, local storage or fingerprinting to identify readers. The service still receives network requests; “cookieless” does not mean no technical data is processed. We request permission before loading it. We do not link statistics with newsletter addresses or messages to the editor.
See the privacy notice for the purpose, basis and rights. There is no advertising, session replay or personalisation.
Other services and links
- Fonts and images: served from this website's own files.
- Newsletter: submitting the native form takes you to Buttondown. No Buttondown script or embedded form is loaded just by reading this site. Buttondown handles its own confirmation, security checks and unsubscribe pages. Open and click measurement is switched off for this publication.
- Video: no video is published yet. External video links, if added, will clearly take you to another service. Native media must pass the accessibility review first.
- Other links: following a link to DeafMetrix or another website takes you to that service and its own privacy practices.
Earlier visits on Lovable hosting
A live-domain audit on 1 November 2026 found three cookies on the earlier Lovable-hosted version: session-id for visitor statistics (30 minutes), __dpl from hosting (24 hours; exact purpose not confirmed), and __cf_bm for bot management (30 minutes). A separate Lovable script also sent page, session, engagement and performance events. These loaded before a reader choice.
The replacement hosting does not include those Lovable scripts. Old cookies from previous visits can remain until their expiry or until you clear site data; the replacement app does not read them. Earlier statistics and logs are subject to the former provider's retention. The earlier claim that the statistics set no cookies was corrected after the audit.
Browser controls and questions
You can also clear or block cookies in your browser. Clearing the preference cookie means you will be asked again and optional measurement will be off until a new choice. Global Privacy Control takes priority over an earlier Allow choice. Turning JavaScript off keeps optional measurement off.
