Readers

Share an experience.

Something happened because the world assumed hearing. The editor would like to read about it. A few lines by email is enough to start.

Both buttons open the email app on this device with a short message ready to edit. The message is reviewed and sent from that app. This page does not send or keep the email or its contents.

How it works

  1. Start an email. Optional prompts are already in it. Delete any of them.
  2. Write a short overview in plain words. Bullet points are fine.
  3. Check the message and send it from the email app.
  4. The editor reads it and aims to reply in writing. A reply is not guaranteed for every message.

Keep the first message short

A short overview is all that is needed at first. Please leave out:

  • medical records or detailed health information;
  • evidence, recordings, ID documents or bank details;
  • passwords or account numbers;
  • names or details that identify other people;
  • confidential documents or links to public videos.

Only a general outline and contact preference are needed now. Appropriate privacy and consent arrangements, and a safe way to share any necessary details, are agreed before evidence or sensitive information is requested.

British Sign Language

Written messages come first. Anyone who prefers BSL can ask, and a way to communicate is then agreed by email. The one-click request above says this without a long explanation.

Please agree a method before recording or sending any video, and do not post recordings publicly. There is no interpreter booking service here, and no promise of a set response time.

The site itself does not have BSL content yet. That is separate from asking for BSL contact arrangements.

Help from someone trusted

A friend, relative or supporter can help write or send a message, with the permission of the person whose experience it is. Permission to publish always has to come from that person directly.

Accounts from anyone under eighteen are not published. No date of birth or proof of deafness is asked for.

If no email app opens

Copy the address into any webmail service. The short template can be copied too.

What this is, and what it is not

  • Correspondence with an editor, for a publication.
  • Not emergency help, legal advice or representation.
  • Not a formal complaint to the organisation involved, and it does not stop any legal time limit running.
  • Email is not guaranteed to be private or anonymous. Sending it does not sign anyone up to the newsletter, give permission to publish or transfer copyright.

Before anything is published

Sending a message does not mean it will be published, and it is never published automatically. If a piece might come of it, the editor discusses it first: what would be used, whether a name appears, and what could still identify someone. Email and published accounts cannot be guaranteed anonymous or confidential. Permission is agreed separately, in writing, and can be withdrawn before publication.

More detail is in the editorial standards and the privacy notice. Other kinds of message, such as corrections or website problems, are listed on the contact page.
